Amr Fekry

visual artist (USA)

  1. Observation in Switzerland

During his stay in Switzerland Amr filmed a guy at the river side from his balcony. On the back ground we hear the Sufi music Amr plays in his room. For a long time it is not clear what the boy is doing. His expressive mimic makes you think he could be an actor. The boy seems to be in doubt about something. Will he climb the fence that divides the river from the road? Eventually he climbs the fence and walks along the road. Every view meters he disappears from the view of the camera behind a tree. He seems to be in state of paranoia, but also this is not clear.
Someone form the audience things the film is tasteless and thinks the boys it being laughed at. A very energetic discussion evolves about showing people who are filmed in the public space without them knowing on a big screen to an audience. Someone asks what Amr would have done if the boy had committed suicide. Amr explains he saw his own state of mind being visualized by the boy. In Switzerland he felt lonely and misplaced. 'Switzerland is like a big hospital'.
